A new report from the Institute of Medicine outlines policy recommendations for reducing the rates of obesity in America. The annual cost of obesity-related illnesses stands at $190.2 billion, while two-thirds of adults and one-third of children are overweight or obese.
The IOM report identified recommendations to meet several goals aimed at fighting obesity. These include increasing physical activity, making healthy foods and beverages available everywhere, and strengthening schools. The report urges state and federal governments as well as the food and health care industries to do their part to curb rising rates of obesity.
